Uglies is a phenomenal book to start the protagonist vs. society literature. This book attacks the Barbie doll image while also creating a wonderful plot to go along. This book will become a classic one day, once it has been out long enough. The protagonist, Tally must make a choice between beauty and parties, or her brain and hard work. I find that the book also explores the pros and cons of each choice, allowing the reader more information on which she should choose. It is a series of four and I recommend you read them all. Note: continue reading the fourth book even though you might not see the connection at first. Recommended for mature twelve year olds, or else 13+.
